At Deepwell, the Seats You Can't Book Face Moore Avenue

How do you get a table at the hardest new reservation in Mooresville when you decide at 6 p.m. on a Thursday that you want one? At Deepwell, you skip the dining room. The bar and the high-top tables don't take reservations, and they sit at the corner of Main Street and Moore Avenue. For almost two years the Town has been turning that corner into downtown's front porch, and Deepwell's bar was built to open onto it.

A Dining Room Booked Weeks Out, and a Bar That Isn't

Deepwell opened Wednesday, Sept. 16, at 185 N. Main St. It's the newest restaurant from chef Joe and Katy Kindred, the couple behind Kindred in Davidson, Hello, Sailor in Cornelius, Albertine in Uptown, and milkbread. CharlotteFive's opening-day report found that the first open reservation for two was Oct. 14 at 8:30 p.m. That put the dining room about four weeks out before the doors had even opened.

The same report pointed to the other way in. Each night some seating is held back for walk-ins at the high-tops and the bar. Axios Charlotte's preview explained the split. The main dining room books through Resy, while bar seats and walk-in tables go first come, first served. That bar is indoor-outdoor and opens onto a patio of roughly 1,500 square feet.

So the room you have to plan for faces inward, toward the open kitchen and the glass-walled curing room. The seats you can just walk into face the street.

The Hours That Shape a Weeknight

Before you count on that walk-in seat, check the calendar. Deepwell serves dinner Wednesday and Thursday from 5 to 9, Friday and Saturday from 5 to 10, and Sunday from 5 to 9. The restaurant's site lists no Monday or Tuesday hours. If you'd rather call ahead about the bar, the number is 980-503-3500.

You don't need a full steakhouse dinner to sit at the bar, either. Axios tasted these dishes at the preview:

  • Smoked redfish dip, $16
  • Pan-seared crab cake, $23
  • Smoked duck gumbo with crawfish and rice, $21
  • Prime brisket with collard greens, Sea Island red peas and the Kindreds' milk bread, $36
  • Prime T-bone, $72
  • The Cypress cocktail, made with vodka, raspberry shrub, lemon and tarragon, $14

A dip, a bowl of gumbo and a cocktail come to $51 before tax and tip. That's well under the T-bone's $72, and it gets you the same chef. That chef is Craig Deihl, the Kindreds' corporate chef, who is Deepwell's executive chef and co-owner. When the restaurant was announced, the Kindred team promised "the long-awaited return of Chef Deihl's famous charcuterie," which Lake Norman Publications reported in May. The bar list runs from ice-cold local beer to a Sazerac and a French 75.

A Building That Took More Than a Year

Deepwell moved into the former JJ Wasabi's, a historic building at the corner of Main Street and Moore Avenue. Lake Norman Publications reported that renovations there had been underway for more than a year before the May announcement. The finished space is about 4,000 square feet and includes a 24-seat private dining room with its own bar and wine storage. CharlotteFive described checkered floors, street-lamp style fixtures, velvet chairs and cushioned banquettes. The bar sits in front of windows, so people at the bar can watch passersby.

In the announcement, the team said Deepwell is meant to feel settled into the block rather than dropped onto it:

"Located in the heart of downtown Mooresville, Deepwell is designed to feel like it's always been here, woven into the fabric of a town we deeply admire."

That line ran in Lake Norman Publications, which also noted something about the location that the opening-day coverage left out. The building borders the new Moore Avenue pedestrian plaza next to the Charles Mack Citizen Center.

Moore Avenue Was Already Turning Into a Front Porch

The plaza came first. The Town of Mooresville set up a temporary pedestrian plaza on Nov. 18, 2024, using barriers and pavement striping. It covers the half block of Moore Avenue just south of Main Street and runs toward Church Street. Lake Norman Publications reported that the segment was converted in time for the 2024 Christmas season as an early preview of downtown improvements. The Town's permanent streetscape plan calls for wider sidewalks, landscaping and better crosswalks. Its stated goals are pedestrian safety and continuity with Main Street.

Here's how that corner has changed:

  1. Nov. 18, 2024. The temporary pedestrian plaza opens on Moore Avenue.
  2. May 28, 2026. The Kindred team announces Deepwell for the former JJ Wasabi's building next to the plaza.
  3. Sept. 16, 2026. Deepwell opens, with an indoor-outdoor bar facing the patio.
  4. Next. The permanent Moore Avenue streetscape, with wider sidewalks, landscaping and new crosswalks.

The plaza was designed for people on foot. For most of its first two years, though, the building beside it was a construction site. Now the corner has a restaurant with a patio built to open toward it.

What the Social District Covers, and What It Doesn't

The bar also opens onto downtown Mooresville's social district, as Axios noted. The Mooresville Downtown Commission says district drinks can be carried within the marked zone from noon to 10 p.m., seven days a week. The drink has to come from a participating ABC-permitted business, in that business's specially marked cup, and stay inside the district boundaries.

Deepwell's name isn't on the Commission's posted list of participating businesses. That list includes 158 on Main, 202 North Main Fine Wines & Spirits, Bae's Burgers, Big Tiny's, Dive Bar, Dulcet & Delish, Famous Toastery Downtown, High Branch Brewing, Murto Made Distillery, On Tap Crafty Brews, Stardust Cellars and Summit Coffee. The district map on the same page is labeled "Updated 10-2025," which is almost a year before Deepwell opened. Ask your bartender before you carry a Sazerac across Moore Avenue. This is a general summary of posted rules, not legal advice, so check the current terms with the Commission or the business serving you.

The hours do line up neatly. On Fridays and Saturdays, Deepwell's last hour ends at 10 p.m., the same time the district closes.

This Fall on the Corner

The Charles Mack Citizen Center at 215 N. Main St. sits across the plaza from Deepwell. Several of downtown's fall dates fall on nights the restaurant is open, so a walk-in bar seat pairs easily with something else on the block.

Date Event Where Deepwell that night
Thu., Oct. 15 North Carolina Music Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. Charles Mack Citizen Center Open 5 to 9
Fri., Oct. 23 Mooresville Movie Nights: Hocus Pocus, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Liberty Park, 255 E. Iredell Ave. Open 5 to 10
Fri., Oct. 30 Halloween Candy Grab, 3 to 5 p.m. Downtown Mooresville Open 5 to 10
Sat., Oct. 31 Mooresville Monster Mash, street closure at 3 p.m. Downtown Mooresville Open 5 to 10
Sat., Nov. 7 Working Fingers Craft Show, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Charles Mack Citizen Center Open 5 to 10
Fri., Nov. 27 Plaid Friday, with Sip & Shop 10 a.m. to noon Downtown Mooresville Open 5 to 10
Sat., Nov. 28 Small Business Saturday Downtown Mooresville Open 5 to 10

The Candy Grab wraps up at 5 p.m., right as Deepwell's doors open. The Working Fingers Craft Show ends at 4, an hour before the bar starts serving. Those are the two easiest handoffs on the list. The night before Thanksgiving falls on a Wednesday, and Deepwell's posted hours don't list a holiday schedule, so call ahead for that week.

The Kindreds' Other Lake Norman Kitchen Is Due Back

For Lake Norman diners, Deepwell opened while one of its sister restaurants was closed. Kindred in Davidson, about 15 minutes away according to Axios, has been closed since a fire in May. News of Davidson reported on Sept. 23 that Kindred is taking reservations for dates beginning Oct. 20. If that date holds, Kindred and Deepwell will both be serving dinner by late October. The Davidson dining room has history behind it, having opened in 2015. Mooresville's has a walk-in bar facing a plaza the Town closed to cars almost two years ago.

Through Thanksgiving, Deepwell's bar seats are the easiest way in, Wednesday through Sunday from 5 p.m.
